oh, the joy! the absolute joy! archie couldn’t remember a recent moment when he had felt so happy. if he could sing, he would have sung. if he could dance, he would have danced. if he could have shouted to the world, he would have shouted to the world, “i’m free, i’m free!”
he had been in “jail” for the last week. a mental jail, to be sure, but it still felt like jail. about six weeks ago, he had received his almost annual jury summons. printed on the outside of the white envelope, in bright red letters, was: official jury summons enclosed―registration required within 5 days. a friend of his had been throwing away such summonses for at least 20 years. archie couldn’t do that―he felt that his luck was so bad that if he tried it, his summons would be the one with the concealed microchip that recorded him throwing the envelope in the trash. then he really would be in jail. so, he dutifully filled out the form and waited until his starting date―november 5, a monday. for that week, he would be “on call” for “no more than five days.”
as instructed, he dialed the 800-srv-jury number on the saturday preceding november 5. he tapped in his pin and jury group number. he listened, and sighed with relief; the recording had told him to call again monday after 5 p.m. so, one day out of five was gone!
on monday and tuesday, archie got the same recording. he had now escaped jury duty for three days, monday through wednesday. only two days to go.
wednesday afternoon, his friend gil called, asking archie if he wanted to play golf the next morning. archie said he was on jury duty that week. gil said, “well, no problem! it’s already wednesday. you’ve made it! there’s no way that they’re going to call you to jury duty this late in the week.” archie couldn’t believe that gil had said that. archie knocked several times on his wooden bookcase, saying that he hoped that gil was right.
at 5:05 that evening, still worried that gil had jinxed him, archie dialed the 800 number. sure enough, the recording told him to call back thursday between noon and 12:30, instead of the usual 5 p.m. damn that gil, archie thought.
thursday, he anxiously called at 12:28. the recording told him that his jury service was finished! all he had to do was mail in the affidavit that had come in the white envelope. archie put the affidavit into an envelope, put a 41-cent first class stamp on the envelope, and drove to the post office. whistling as he dropped the envelope into the mailbox, he happily washed his hands once again of the “privilege” of doing jury service.

good morning, honorable judges,
recently, due to the increasing number of population, china has become a country with a big problem of balancing the relationship between housing price and people’s demand for dwelling .the fact that housing prices is soaring everyday actually sparkles heated debates among both citizens and peasants. people multiply daily are complaining against the skyrocketing housing prices.
yesterday, i saw a tv program through shenzhen channel concerning the soaring housing prices in our country. that program dispatched many journalists to have interviews with the public in which they are asked about what’re their opinions of the theme. unexpectedly, most of the interviewees make complaints about the soaring housing price. they hold firmly to belief that such state of affairs is irrational and abnormal. the higher housing prices are, the less people who can afford it. hence, this may conduce to exceedingly severe living problems. with no lodgings to live in, people begin to do something immoral, and more crimes will come forth, then, social instability ensue. out of this point, some people may blame the government for not being able to command macroscopic regulation such as not cracking down on illegal purchasing approaches. while others hold the view that some special groups should takeresponsibility for the soaring housing prices problem. as some wealthy people or powerful personages are in p
ursuit of being wealthier by owing more houses through proper or improper ways, the housing prices are forced to be raised. constant complaints against soaring housing prices will continue unless that tendency drops off.
after stating this universal complaint against soaring housing prices, i would like to come up with my viewpoints. personally, i deem that this problem is really a hot potato. it depends on the governmental control and personal morality. however, in order to stop the housing prices from going up, i stick to the idea that the central government should make some effective laws , levy more taxes on house property just as western countries do to restrict rich people to purchasing and selling their houses. with the mutual efforts made by people and the government, there is no denying that the complaint against soaring housing prices will disappear one day.
thank you for all your listening!

smoking
smoking should be prohibited, for the world health organization point out that disease linked to smoking kills at least 2,500,000 people each year.
smoking leads to not only lung cancer, but many other diseases such as heart attacks, sore throat, headache, chronic bronchitis, etc.
smoking not only is harmful to the smokers themselves, but also results in the deaths of non-smokers. statistics show that passive smoking is causing 3000 to 5000 lung cancer deaths a year among american non-smokers. an american scientist estimated that smokers who smoke average a package a day for 20 years will lose about eight years of their lives.
smoking makes the indoor environment far more polluted than the outdoor environment.
pregnant women who smoke run the risk of having deformed babies.
smoking is an expensive habit, for a smoker who consumes a package of cigarettes a day will have to spend at least 300 yuan each month, more than one third of average salary in china.
children exposed to parental cigarette smoking are put at a higher risk of developing lung diseases later in their lives.
in the countryside, some smokers share the same pipe, which is even unhealthier. smoking speeds up the process of aging.
smoking not only pollutes the air but also makes the streets dirty, for some smokers flick the ash off their cigarettes and throw the cigarette ends everywhere. smokers help increase the revenue of the
government.
nicotine can produce tranquilizing effect during high emotional situation, therefore helps to calm people down, and wipe out their loneness and fatigue. smokers should have the right to keep their habits.
honorable judges, fellow students: good afternoon!
recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. the college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. but will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? will we be able to better the lives of others? will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?
the cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. but the cynics are wrong. the college students i see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. we help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.
the cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. but again, the cynics are wrong. we care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.
as college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. we all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. i believe in all my fellow classmates. though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. i believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. we are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. i believein our future.

college―a transitin point in my life
when i first entered college as a freshma, i was afraid that i off by myself, away from my family for the first time. here i was surrounded by people i did know and who did know me. i would have to make friends with them and perhaps also compete with them for grades in courses i would take. were they smarter than i was? could i keep up with them? would they accept me?
i soon learned that my life was now up to me. i had to set a study program if i wanted to succeed in my courses. i had to regulate the time i spent studying and the time i spent socializing. i had to decide when to go to bed, when and what to eat, when and what to drink, and with whom to be friendly. these questions i had to answer for myself.
at first, life was a bit difficult. i made mistakes in how i uesd my time. i spent too much time making friends. i also made some mistakes in how i chose my first friends in college.
shortly, however, i had my life under my control. i managed to go to class on time, do my first assigments and hand them in, and pass my first exams with fairly good grades. in addition, i made a few friends with whom i felt comfortable and with whom i could share my fears. i set up a routine that was really my own-a routine that met my needs.
as a result, i began to look upon myself from a different perspective. i began to see myself as a person responsible for myself ans responsible for my friends and family. it felt good to make my own decisions and see those decisions turn out to be wise ones. i guess that is all part of what people call "growing up."
what did life have in store for me? at that stage in my life, i really was not certain where i would ultimately go in life and what i would do with the years ahead of m. but i knew that i would be able to handle what was ahead because i had successfully jumped this improtant hurdle in my life: i had made the transition from a person dependent in my family for emotional support to a person who was responsible for myself.
good morning, ladies and gentlemen:<
today i'm very happy to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of globalization. and first of all, i would like to mention an event in our recent history.
thirty years ago, american president richard nixon made an epoch-making visit to china, a country still isolated at that time. premier zhou enlai said to him, "your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world - twenty-five years of no communication." ever since then, china and america have exchanged many handshakes of various kinds. the fundamental implication of this example is that the need and desire to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.
as we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world's economy, and diplomats and politicians are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. underlying this mighty trend of globalization is the echo of e. m. forster's words, "only connect!"
with the it revolution taking place, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into a large melting pot of humanity. in this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. we have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.
china is now actively integrating into the world. our recent entry to the wto is a good example. for decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. from the precarious role in the world arena to our present wto membership, we have come a long way.
but what does the way ahead look like? in some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. are they justified then, in criticizing the globalizing world? instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. globalization, they argue, should be about an earnest interest in every other nation's economic health.
we are reminded by karl marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. this has become a reality. multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favorable policy. they are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market place and a devastating presence to local businesses.
