上海对外贸易学院 2002 年攻读硕士学位研究生入学考试 英文写作试题 Write a composition in about 800 words on the following (80%) It is said that the key to everything is patience. Discuss the statement. Some people say that the key to everything is patience. And I cannot agree more. Patience means steadfastness in purpose. It is patience that keeps us continually doing something valuable and admirable in spite of difficulties and discouragement. And it is patience that makes us renowned in due course. Therefore, patience is momentous and fundamental to any one who undertakes great deeds. When someone disagrees with you or offends you, don’t lose your temper. Why? Because it is of no use to do so. You ought to (should) be patient and keep calm lest you should quarrel with him. You must know that patience is not cowardice, but a virtue. I hope that everybody practices it. In addition, patience will also bring us success. When you meet with difficulties in your work, it is no use losing heart. You must keep on fighting until (till) the final victory belongs to you. Just like a famous Chinese saying goes: lack of forbearance in a trivial matter will spoil the whole. There are more or less difficulties in doing things, and the greater the thing is, the more numerous the difficulties that will come forth. But it is much better for one to be patient than to despair. Mencius said, “when heaven is about to confer a great office on any man, it first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil. It exposes his body to hunger, and subjects him to extreme poverty. It stimulates his mind, consolidates his character, and increases his efficiency”. So, let us be patient. Indeed, if we do a thing without patience, nothing will be done in the end.
