古老的三河已经有2500多年的历史了，因丰乐河、杭埠河和小南河三水流灌其间而得名。早在战国时期古镇就已具雏形，因为经常有许多水鸟在这里聚集所以在那时又被称为鹊渚、鹊岸;直到明朝才被称为三河。在这三条河流中，主要的河道要数丰乐河和小南河了。镇内，河水缠绕五里长街;镇外，圩堤交错，支津回互;具有外环两岸、中峙三洲的独特地貌，占尽庐南水乡地利，是安徽著名的鱼米之乡。因为这里交通便利，本地的稻米鱼虾，上游的山货特产，下游的丝绸百货都经过此地集散后流向四面八方，故三河赢得了 ‘装不完的三河’和‘皖中商品走廊’等美誉。
古镇三河自古就是兵家必争的战略要地。历史上是著名的古战场。春秋战国时期，在这里发生过吴、楚之争的鹊岸之战。明末，张献忠的农民起义军利用三河为跳板攻打庐州，在三河缴获双樯巨舟300余艘，并凭借着三河的有利地形建立了水军。清咸丰八年，太平军将领陈玉成在此歼灭湘军悍将李续宾部及曾国藩胞弟曾国华等共6000余人，这就是史上有名的“三河大捷”。现今还保存有太平军城墙遗址、大捷门等。
古镇三河水乡如梦，古河如画。水多，河多，行走不方便，所以桥也自然多了起来，仅在小南河上就有三县桥，望月桥，天然桥，人民桥等5座桥梁。这些桥，不但古韵犹存，而且座座桥名都有着不同的传奇故事。就拿望月桥来说吧：望月桥是古镇三河新建的风景桥，是一座拱形踏步单孔石桥。整座桥全是用厚青石铺就，栏杆上皆有青石浮雕。晚上登上这座桥，仰望空中明月，俯瞰水中倒影，会给您诗一般的感受。在众多桥梁中最为著名的还要数三县桥了。或许大家会问为什么会称它为三县桥呢，那是因为这座三县桥是三河古镇现存的古桥中历史最久的一座，横跨小南河上，位于古镇的中心，成为连接肥西、舒城、庐江三县的纽带，所以称三县桥。由于整座桥全是用大料石搭建，所以当地人又称它为石头大桥。最令人称奇的当数三县桥的建桥工艺了，当年一块块桥石都是用煮熟的糯米加鸡蛋清熬成的浆灌缝牢牢地粘结在一起的呢。
古镇三河因水得名也因水而闻名。三河水美，水给古镇带来了灵性，但也不断遭受水患之苦。特别是1991年7月11日16时17分，丰乐河水位高达14·23米，新圩段大堤溃决，古镇三河遭受灭顶之灾，被特大洪水吞没。在那场震惊全国、震动世界的特大洪水面前，在党中央、国务院的关心下，全国人民和国际友人的援助下，上下一心，军民合力，解救被洪水围困的群众6000余人，创造了百年不遇的大水中未淹死一人、饿死一人、病死一人的亘古奇迹。

令我印象最深的便是小姐的闺房，最神奇的是，晴天可以看到彩虹。走到楼里，大大的鱼塘便映入我们的眼帘，鱼塘中间有个长得像乌龟般的石头，上面爬满了乌龟和青蛙，池塘内还有两条红红的金鱼。石头上面有亮闪闪硬币，怎么也看不出有什么特别之处。
我们上楼，在楼上往下看，又看到了那个池塘，导游走过来，拿起旁边的木板，架在从上往下留出来的水中，一道美景就出现了，银光闪闪的池塘边，竟有一道彩虹。说实话，我见到的彩虹并不多，所以我很珍惜每次见到彩虹的时间。那一刻真的很美。

走过一条繁华的街道，就到了丢掉水乡古镇的东大门，大家请看那座高大的牌楼，上面书写着大捷门三个大字，它是为了纪念太平天国在这块土地上勇战湘军，大获全胜的历史功绩。1858年11月太平天国次陈玉成，李秀成根据计划，围捷三河，全歼湘军精锐李继宾部六千余人，取得了近代史上有名的三河大捷。第二年，也就是陈玉成二十二岁那年，他因战功显赫而被洪秀全封为英王，在三河，人们习惯于把三河大捷时陈玉成的指挥部称为英王府。将通往英王府的这条路称为英王路，前面就是英王府，大家可以进去自由参观一下。
在英王路的斜对面，有一座古色古香的建筑物它就是万年台，清朝咸丰年间，三河建有两座万年台，前者为师傅所建，后者系徒弟所造，他们两人建万年台时，约定都用八根柱子，谁知第二年，师傅用偷梁换柱法，将柱子抽去四根，仅留下四根，所以城隍庙的万年台只有四根顶梁，看上去十分精巧，雅观，造型超过了他徒弟所建的大王庙万年台，此万年台系后重建的。
大家向右走，现在大家来到的就是古西街。街道不宽，全是青石板铺就的路，两侧民居多建于明清时代，古西街原长五百来米，曾号称五里古街。三河镇在古时交通闭塞的情况下具有水乡交通便捷的优势，使这里的商品经济一时得到空前的繁荣。
