i do not have as much fun as before and i always miss my childhood. three hours of homework and two piano lessons one day make me have hardly any me-time to relax myself. i was once an active basketball player on my school team. but now, basketball, my best friend, i haven’t touched it for almost two months. me- time seems to have become a luxury.
last week, when i heard there was going to be a basketball match between our school and no 1 middle school, i was so excited that i rushed home and told my parents the news. i asked my father, “ dad, may i play basketball after school ? the coach says i am the best guard in our school. if i join the school basketball team, we are sure to beat no 1 middle school this time.” my father showed his dispproval and said, “ of course you can’t . i’m disappointed at you. why do you have such a silly idea? don’t forget to work hard on your schoolwork and piano lessons.” in my parents’ points of view, playing basketball is a waste of time.
as far as i’m concerned, the school assignment to the junior school students is too heavy. to grow into healthy and well-rounded adults, we should be allowed to have more me-time for relaxation. the pressure put on our students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally.

to the nature, overpopulation is a big problem. more people, more pollution. and the big population is threatening the nature every second.
the rapid rise in world population is not creating problems only for the developing countries. the whole world faces the problem that raw materials are being used up at an increasing rate and food production can not keep up with the population increase. people in rich countries make the heaviest demands on the world's resources, its food, fuel and land, and cause the most pollution. a baby born in the united states will use in his lifetime 30 times more of the world's resources than a baby born in india. unless all the countries of the world take united action to deal with the population explosion there will be more and more people fighting for a share of less and less land, food and fuel, and the future will bring poverty, misery and war to us all.

i am losing friends left and right, well, actually, only left. some friendships, however, have been strengthened during this election.
when i was 6, i learned a song: "make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold." even as a child, i was a born raconteur, so i always had lots of friends. but, by the time i got to fourth grade, i was already getting into political brawls. early on, i began living my politically active mother's joke, "my name, it opens some doors and closes others."
i learned to tone it down a bit by the time i got to college. as a theater major, it was fun in an acting class one day, when we each had to pretend to be another student. i chose to mimic a beautiful petite girl with long dark hair. she was my polar opposite, this former cheerleader-turned-hippie-princess named michelle. she got a kick out of my impression of her. i thought it was cool that she could laugh at herself. we began a friendship that has brought us to the present day.
yet we were always opposites. i am roman catholic, she is jewish. i am tall, she is short. one rainy afternoon on campus, michelle insisted on carrying the umbrella for both of us, (i don't think i stood up straight until the next day!)
back then, she was as passionate a democrat as i was a republican. however, my friend and i still had something in common that was more important than all the differences. we shared the same values and they showed up in a dozen little ways. that is why we are friends almost 30 years later. furthermore, she had been moving in my direction politically before, but sept. 11, 20xx, brought us to a new level of communication. we have bonded even more during this election.
sadly, i also have re-evaluated some other friendships as tensions increased due to the kerry-edwards demagoguery. this is the first time in memory that i've even been appalled by both spouses of the democratic ticket. i rather liked tipper gore and hadassa lieberman. i thought they were sweet. and that's the way i used to feel about my liberal pals. but, now a teresa heinz-kerry-like irrationality/elizabeth edwards snotty innuendo has infected some of them -- and it makes them unpleasant to be around.
this election may leave those friendships in its wake. the outlook is definitely not good for their christmas card inclusion.
sept. 11, iraq, the demonization of israel by kerry's european fans, the beheadings -- all of the latter just doesn't seem to change the '90s mentality of those i know who are voting for the democratic party ticket. like kerry, they still seem to consider the united states' life-and-death struggle a nuisance. these liberal friends of mine are certainly not bad people, but deep down, they still don't get that we are at war with a greater evil than any of us has ever known. combined with the extremism culturally on the left, these people are becoming more than a nuisance themselves.
the sobering fact is that these friendships are just too taxing (in both senses of that word). those relationships have become like old prom dresses in that they just don't fit anymore. there comes a point where some associations can become a fire hazard in one's closet. it may be time to do spring cleaning, even if the season is autumn.
sure, friends can't agree on everything, nor are they supposed to but though i may think someone's a nice person, fun, etc., increasingly deep differences in our world view can't be ignored in these frightening times.
three decades later, michelle is no longer the shorter-than-me actress who insisted on carrying the umbrella as we walked to class, though she is still shorter than me. but she and i easily walk together under an umbrella of shared concerns. a few weeks ago we sat side by side at a most moving event celebrating jewish and christian support of israel and each other.
yet, we still live very different lives. my college friend has been married for 25 years to the love of her life, the mother of three and an executive in an entertainment corporation. and meanwhile her single free-lancing writer/actress friend, even after all these years still does impressions of her only in print now.
happily, others have also come along to become comrades in arms this election. they represent a diversity in lifestyle that would warm any liberal's heart (although said liberal wouldn't warm our hearts). there's genie the stockbroker, cathy the casting director, robin the mom of one of my former acting students, sally the daughter of one of my mother's old friends and many others. their e-mail messages and calls let me know that though other friendships may wither during this election, i'm hardly alone. they all have a point of view that enables us to skip to shorthand. ("did you read drudge?" "yep!") all of these women make up my own personal non-elitist version of "the view, the conservative cut."
yes, now those old children's lyrics resonate with a new meaning in "make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." regretfully, without shared values even after this tumultuous election of 20xx, some friendships may have turned to a tin that rings hollow in these perilous times.
by the way, i recently chatted with one of those former brownies who sang with me so long ago, she is a "security mom." she is voting for george w. bush and she will definitely be included on my christmas card list.

when two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit into the tradition of the other. when this happens, we need to learn to understand and respect the customs of another culture. then there are certain things some people may not like. to this, i will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it. to learn to tolerate what you personally don’t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mix and merge. before us, there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. at present, they may run in different courses. but eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of human culture.

ray’s wedding had gone off without a hitch. everyone seemed to have had a good time. a few people had too good of a time; they went home with designated drivers. all evening, the gift table remained unguarded. who would steal anything, ray thought. he had never heard of such a thing happening at a wedding. but his best friend aaron said there was a first time for everything. he strolled out regularly from the inside festivities to check on the gift table, making sure no one suspicious was hanging around it.
ray and julia went on a 3-week honeymoon to italy right after the wedding. when they got back, they opened all the gifts and sent out thank you notes. but there was one problem. a married couple that used to be good friends had apparently given nothing. this surprised julia, because walt and mary said they were thrilled to be invited. and, they actually seemed to have had a great time at the wedding. frankly, ray didn’t even care if they hadn’t given a gift. he just needed to know whether to send a thank you note. ray called aaron. aaron said maybe walt had left an envelope on the gift table like aaron had. “yes, but we got your envelope with the cash inside,” ray said.
“maybe my envelope looked too thin, and some thief thought walt’s envelope looked nice and fat.”
aaron asked ray if he had looked everywhere for walt’s gift. had he called up the wedding site to see if anything had been left behind? ray said that he had looked everywhere and made a lot of calls that were fruitless.
ray didn’t know what to do. if he sent walt and mary a thank you note for a gift they hadn’t given, they would be insulted. if he didn’t send them a thank you note for a gift they had given, they would be insulted.
“what would you do?” ray asked. aaron said he would call walt up and tell him the problem.
“you can’t go wrong with simply being honest,” aaron said.
“oh, yes, you can,” ray countered. “sometimes it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie.” but he thought about it, and finally decided that honesty might be the best policy. he called walt and told him the problem. walt said that yes, he had given an envelope. in fact, the envelope contained $500 cash.
“$500?!” ray asked. “that’s a lot of cash, walt!” walt admitted that it was, but he had gotten a fat raise early that year and ray’s was the only wedding he’d been to in quite a while. ray thanked him very much, and apologized sincerely for someone stealing walt’s generous gift. walt told him that it was “only money.”
when ray told aaron about walt’s gift, aaron laughed. “the only thief at the wedding was walt! i quit playing cards with him last year because i caught him cheating. and it was only a $10 pot! i’m sure i told you about that.”
“yes, you did tell me,” ray said. but, of course, he had to send walt a thank you note anyway.
