there are a lot of views whether the best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide. differentpeople has different viewpoint. in my opinion, a group led by a tour guide is the best way totravel. the argument for this view goes as follows:
in the first place, there are many advantages when people travel in a group. first, people will notfeel boring in a long trip. people can talk, laugh and make joking like a big family. second, thegroup will help you a lot when you have any emergency. the people in the group could help youfigure out the awkward situation that will be unimaginable when you travel alone. third, with thegroup discount, such as the discount for airplane ticket, the hotel, and the admission ticket, travelers can save a lot of money when they use the group discount.
in the second place, there are many advantages too when people travel led by a tour guide. thetour guide will arrange all the details about the trip in advance. the traveler need not worry aboutwhere to find the hotel, where to rent the car, and how to find the direction. it will make the trip a little bit easy. another advantage is that led by a tour guide will save much time than travelingalone. with the professional knowledge, tour guide will make the smartest schedule. i wouldnever forget that one of my friend, a city tour guide in the shanghai, china, said that she can leadtraveler to visit the whole city by one day which people should spend two or three days to finishit.
in conclusion, there are many advantages when people travels in a group led by a tour guide, suchas save money, save time, do not feel boring, and is easy to take care of. therefore, i
i support the idea that a factory to be built near our community. i list my reasons as follows. firstly, a new factory near our community helps to improve living standard of people in our community. the factory will employ a lot of workers. as a consequence, the unemployment rate will drop significantly. many people in our community will find a job in the factory. as peoples income increases, they will be able to spend more money on their food, clothing and leisure time, and the quality of life will be increased.
secondly, a new factory will bring prosperity to our community. the tax collected from a factory is an important source of revenue for our town. as people have higher income, income tax collected will also be increased. the town will be able to spend more money on infrastructures and other development. moreover, in order to accommodate more workers, more homes and stores will be needed. this will boost real estate development in our community.
some people say that a factory would bring smog and pollution, and destroy the quality of the air and water in town. this is not the truth. modern technologies have made todays factories technology intensive and brought pollutions to the minimum. there are also worries that the social structure of this community will be changed and the traditional life will be affected. we should understand that society needs to evolve and we cannot always stay in the old time.
of course, there will be some drawbacks of building a new factory here. but in my opinion, the benefits outweigh the dangers. i
in 1990, new rules and guidelines were adopted in the united kingdom that has changed the whole field of archaeology in that country. the new guidelines improved the situation in all there areas discussed in the passage.
first, the new guidelines state that before any construction project can start, the construction site has to be examined by archaeologists to see whether the site is of archaeological interest or value. if the site is of archaeological interest, the next step is for the builders, archaeologists and local government officials to get together and make a plan for preserving the archaeological artifacts, either by building around them or by excavating and documenting them properly before the construction is allowed to proceed.
second, an important part of the new guidelines is a rule that any archaeological work done on the construction site will be paid for by the construction company not by the government. the construction company has to pay for the initial examination of the site, and then for all the work carried out under the preservation plan. this is a whole new source of financial support. the funding from construction companies has allowed researchers to study a far greater range of archaeological sites than they could in the past.
last, the new guidelines provide a lot of paid work for archaeologists, work that didn’t exist before. expert archaeologists are now hired at all stages of the process to examine the site for archaeological value, then to help draw up the preservation plan to do the research in a professional scientific manner and finally to process the date and write reports and articles. the increased job and career opportunities in archaeology have increased the number of professional archaeologists in britain, which is now the highest it’s ever been.

task:some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. which point of view do you agree with? use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.
some people think that university students should be able to choose whether to go to classes or not. i could not disagree more with this idea. even though students can have excused absences, for example, when they are sick or have something emergent to attend, generally they should be required to go to classes. in fact, attending classes has many advantages, three of them most important: learning from the teacher, interacting with classmates, and developing responsibility. attending classes has the benefit of receiving the best that a teacher can offer. good teachers review the difficult and key pints of the material in the course textbook. the best teachers do more than this. they conduct group discussion of the material, and present alternative points of view on the same issue. this increases students real understanding and critical thinking.
moreover, teachers supplement the textbook material with information provide by guest speakers, which further enhances students understanding. all this implies that, if students are absent from class, it is tantamount to forfeiting their right to full benefits of teacher-guided learning in class. going to classes also helps students learn how to work with their classmates. in class, students need to put forward their ideas. they have to take questions from their classmates and when their classmates have a different point of view, they have to defend their own. all this is conducted in a friendly manner. interaction of this kind teaches students about how to work with other people.
finally, going to classes enables students to develop responsibility. having to finish all the assigned readings before class helps prepare them for getting a job. so does the requirement of being punctual for class. similarly, having to complete assignment on time for class helps them to foster responsibility.
admittedly, students can obtain information from books, but they benefit a great deal more when they go to classes. they have the advantage of learning from their teacher, of interacting with other people, and of developing the responsibility required of a good worker as well as a good student. if these skills in life are in no sense optional, how can attending classes in a university be optional?

some people prefer to live in a small town. others prefer to live in a big city. which place wouldyou prefer to live in? use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
i grew up in a small town and then moved to a big city, so i have experienced the good and badsides of both. i never thought that i would like living in a big city, but i was wrong. after ten yearsof living in one, i cant imagine ever living in a small town again.
small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transportation. in a small town, you have to own a car to ensure a comfortable living. you cant get around without one becausethere isnt any kind of public transportation. big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensiveparking, but there you have a choice of taking public transportation. its not free, but its oftencheaper than driving when you consider gas and time. especially if you dont have a car, yourebetter off in the city.
i love the excitement of big cities. small towns have a slow pace. large cities mean you have toadapt to a variety of situations, like finding a new route to work or trying a new restaurant. i enjoythat challenge very much. another pan of the excitement of city living is the variety of culturalactivities available. there is a wide assortment of theatre, music and dance performancesavailable in big cities. these things are rare in small ones.
the final thing i like about large cities is the diversity of the people. the united states is made upof people of different races, religions, abilities, and interests. however, you seldom find such avariety of people in a smaller town. i think that living in an area where everyone was just like mewould quickly become boring.
of course, security is a concern, and thats one area where small towns are superior to big , i would rather be a bit more cautious and live in a large city than to feel secure but bored.

where should we live? some may choose to live in big cities, while other like the natural and quietsurroundings in countryside. as far as i am concerned, i would like to live in a big city becauseliving in a big city has more advantages than living in countryside.
to begin with, the city is the symbol of human civilization and there are a many facilities forliving, recreation and health care. therefore, living there is more convenient than living incountryside. for example, we can find a plenty of malls around our neighborhood, where we canbuy everyday necessities at a low price. furthermore, people concern more about their health andsafety than other things in their lives. in big cities, medical facilities and emergency services areeasily accessible than in countryside. big cities also have convenient transportation and utilitysystems. they also offer faster internet connections. these all make our life easier in big addition, we can take part in a variety of events in big cities. human being likes to live togetherand need to interact with each other. in a big city, the population density is high therefore thereare always plenty of social activities, sports events and concerts. there are more recreationalplaces in big cities, such as opera houses, movie theatres, clubs, and swimming pools. you willhave many kinds of entertainment in big cities, and meet many people. in countryside, however, the life may be dull and quite, and you may only have a few neighbors. living alone with fewactivities can easily cause mental diseases.
some may argue that the pollution in cities makes people sick. however, with automobiles andmodern highways we can easily take a break to expose to fresh air in countryside and sunshine onthe beach.

a doubled lifespan
if scientists could create a pill that let you live twice as long while remaining free of infirmities, would you take it?
if one considers only the personal benefits that longer life would bring, the answer might seem like a no-brainer : people could spend more quality time with loved ones; watch future generations grow up; learn new languages; master new musical instruments; try different careers or travel the world.
……
the workplace
for most people, living longer will inevitably mean more time spent working. careers will necessarily become longer, and the retirement age will have to be pushed back, not only so individuals can support themselves, but to avoid overtaxing a nation’s social security system.
…
but such changes would carry their own set of dangers, critics say. competition for jobs would become fiercer as “mid-life re-trainees” beginning new careers vie with young workers for a limited number of entry-level positions. especially worrisome is the problem of workplace mobility, callahan said. “if you have people staying in their jobs for 100 years, that is going to make it really tough for young people to move in and get ahead,” callahan explained.
20年后我们会变得更加长寿,这就意味着我们的退休年龄push back了,在这种年轻人不断进入职场,而年长者延迟退休的情况下,是不是竞争压力要更大了呢?同时篇章中许多expressions是我们都可以学习的,eg. mid-life re-trainees人到中年再就业者;a limited number of entry-level positions有限的招聘岗位;

it is a waste of money for government to fund space travel and exploration.
main point: disagree
sub point2: space exploration是非常practical的一项投资,不能说是a waste of money.

3 unit3----exploring the red planet
mars: our new home?
if you think you’d like to live on mars, you may have that possibility by 2023. a dutch company called mars one will soon advertise for people interested in colonizing mars. if you have all the necessary skills—and there are a lot—you could be one of the first colonists to mars. are you ready for the challenge?
…
as a future colonist in one of the six teams, you will go through years of training. if your team is the first team to travel to mars, your main responsibility when you get there will be to build a place where humans can live. the atmosphere on mars does not have enough oxygen for humans, and the land is not good enough to grow food. colonists will have to create an artificial environment on mars where there is air to breathe and land to farm. scientists know earth-like conditions can be simulated on mars because something similar has already been done in antarctica, where humans cannot survive outside the created environment.(对火星环境的具体描述&科学家们如何将其改造的适合人类居住。)
humans may have another problem in space as well. it takes nearly a year to get to mars, so travelers would be without the earth’s gravity for a long time. in addition, mars one astronauts will not return to earth. their mission is to start a colony that can support itself. so, the colonists will live the rest of their lives there. when a human lives in an environment without gravity or with low gravity for a long time, the systems in the body weaken. for example, muscles and bones lose strength. the heart also gets weaker. the blood in the body gets thicker, and it becomes more difficult for the heart to push blood through the body. luckily, spinning the spaceship can create artificial gravity, and artificial gravity can ease these problems.(针对情况:我们的身体可能会遇到挑战,例如失重。)
it also will be difficult for mars colonists to be isolated, far from home, living in small spaces, and seeing the same people over and over. it is important to come up with solutions to possible problems before anyone actually goes on a mars mission. colonists with depression could put the mission in danger. fortunately, a few years ago, a joint russian and european project called the mars500 mission took place. it studied people’s reactions to long-term space travel by following six astronauts in a mars-like environment. the astronauts spent 520 days in this environment and only had contact with their bosses and their families. the six astronauts “returned” to the earth in good physical condition—and still talking to each other. scientists viewed the mars500 mission as a great success because they were able to see how the astronauts handle emotional and physical stresses. surprisingly, the greatest emotional problem was boredom. the greatest physical problems were not getting enough sleep and gaining too much weight.
现在我们回到[sub point2: space exploration是非常practical的一项投资,不能说是a waste of money.]

in the past people were more friendly than they are today.
main point: agree

do you agree or disagree with the following statement? the more money a person has, the more he or she should give away to the charities
main point: disagree
